Press Release NepaliMed Holland

On 5 April 2008 Nepalimed Holland will celebrate its tenth anniversary in the clubhouse of Golf Club Havelte. Doctor Ram Shrestha, founder and managing director of Dhulikhel Hospital, will be present at the celebrations.

Nepalimed supports medical help on the roof of the world, especially in Dhulikhel Hospital. The town of Dhulikhel is 30 kilometres east of Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dhulikhel Hospital (DHOS) is a private, nonprofit institution. The hospital is financially supported by the council of Dhulikhel, not by the government. Fortunately, the Nepalese government does recognise the hospital for what it is: an example of how health care should be organised.

At the moment they are trying to bring medical care closer to the people in remote areas by building so-called medical outposts. People no longer have to walk through desolate regions for days to get medical care. A lot of money is needed to realise the outposts. Therefore more financial support is necessary!

Goals of the hospital:

  1. Diagnostic and therapeutic care such as laboratory, X-ray, E.C.G., ultrasonic examination, pharmacy, outpatient clinic, and hospital facilities including operating theatre and emergency care
  2. Training doctors, nurses and midwives
  3. Care for mother and child
  4. Family planning
  5. Immunity programmes
  6. Training volunteers in medical care, so-called Traditional Birth Attendants
  7. Health care education in schools

The origin of Nepalimed
Ammy and Jan van Gooswilligen from De Wijk visited Nepal in the autumn of 1997. When they were tracking through the Annapurna area, their guide drew their attention to the new hospital in Dhulikhel.
He introduced them to doctor Ram Kanta Shrestha, a very energetic young Nepalese, a surgeon and the managing director of the hospital. Ram Shrestha had his training as a doctor and surgeon in Austria.

Ammy and Jan were impressed by the suffering and poverty of the Nepalese people. Therefore they looked for an opportunity to help structurally. Now that they had found Dhulikhel hospital, it was clear that they, both doctors, could contribute substantially to the health care in Nepal. The fact that Dhulikhel hospital was well organised and financially reliable, was the decisive factor in founding Nepalimed Holland.

Nepalimed has two spearheads:

  1. Care for mother and child
  2. Improving medical specialities, among which urology

During the past ten years Nepalimed accomplished many things. Contributing to medical education, building accommodation for (para)medical students and building the outpost of Dapcha are the most remarkable projects.
In order to achieve all this we annually organise the Charity Golf tournament in which well-known (ex) topsportsmen compete.

It goes without saying that the work is not done. Should you wish to contribute, you can support us by becoming a friend, supporter or benefactor of the Foundation of Nepalimed.
The account number of the Foundation of Nepalimed is 67.38.09.749 at ING Bank in Meppel.

Financial support is possible in various ways:

  1. once-only contributions
  2. periodic benefactions
  3. legacies
